Four Of the Newest Breeds American Kennel Club

1. The Cirneco dell'Eta



Resembles the Pharaoh Hound, and moreover reminds us of the Anubis, the Jackal god of ancient Egypt.

A Cirneco named Amy Bella wrote a chapter in dog show history in July 2007 when she became the first of her breed to win an all-breed Best in Show in the U.S. She was also seen by thousands on national TV in Febreuary when she won Best of Breed at the famed Westminister.

2. Pumi


Originating from the 16th and 17th centruy has two distinct characteristics one being the ears, which are medium sized and sit on top half-pointed upwards. Next, the hair resembles a corkscrew look. The dog is a working class and is agile to work in pastures to herd sheep.

3. Lagotto Romagnolo


A type of game dog, the dog's name translates to "wetland hunting dog with crimped, curly coat." As the marshes of comacchio and Romagna disappeared over time, so did the Lagotto's original function. However, his superb sense of smell and tacking ability resulted in a second career.

4. Miniature American Shepherd


This breed was created in the late 1960's in California with the breeding of small, unregistered dogs thought to be Australian Shepherds. The goal was to retain the dog's intelligence, active nature and small size. The breed was first registered with the National Stock Dog Registryin the 1980s. By the 1990s their popularity had snowballed, and they were registered and shown with various breed organizations across the county.
